What is the age group of kids involved in Brave Schoolers?
We currently have children ranging from five to twelve years old (kindergarten through sixth grade), with book clubs geared towards lower elementary (ages 5-8) and upper elementary (ages 9-12) as well as group activities for all.
What activities do you offer throughout the year?
Group activities include monthly moms’ nights which have a discussion topic related to homeschooling and/or family life, nature club where the kids will make nature journals in the beginning of the school year and then use them throughout the year for nature study gatherings, two monthly book clubs- one for ages 5-8 using Five in a Row titles and one for ages 9-12 using the Brave Writer Arrow book list, kids’ game nights, poetry tea times and a variety of field trips.
Do I have to use Brave Writer curriculum in order to join Brave Schoolers?
Many of our actives, such as nature study and poetry teatimes, are based on the Brave Writer Lifestyle, but members are not required to use Brave Writer curriculum. Our book club will follow the Arrow subscription schedule for the year, so using those Arrow guides at home will enhance your study. Overall, we encourage members to choose the curriculum and/or teaching style that best suits their family.
Will the group have a Boomerang book club?
We do not currently have a Boomerang book club scheduled for the 2018-19 school year. The Boomerang is geared towards kids ages 13-16, which is above the age range currently involved in our group. There will likely be a Boomerang or Pouch book club starting in the 2019-20 school year.
Where are you located/ where does the group meet?
Our group is based in Cary, North Carolina, and will meet for most events either in Cary or the surrounding area including Raleigh, Apex, Morrisville, and occasionally farther for field trips.
How big is your group?
Brave Schoolers is designed to be a small group. The reason for this is that we want to keep a small community feel where members can really get to know each other and build friendships through spending time together at group activities. Membership will be closed when we reach a comfortable capacity for our group activities.
How do I join the group?
If you are interested in joining Brave Schoolers, you can contact us here to find out about upcoming events. If we have space available, we’ll invite you to meet the group to see if it is a good fit for your family.
If membership is closed, when will it reopen? Is there a waiting list?
Each summer group size will be evaluated based on the number of participating children and the leadership team will decide if there is room to add more families and how many. We may add more families during the school year if space becomes available. If membership is at capacity, interested families may join the waiting list to be contacted when space is available.
I tried to join your Facebook group but was not accepted. Why?
The Brave Schoolers closed Facebook page is for members only. We use the page for discussion within the group as well as sharing events and get togethers with group members. Once you become a member you will be invited to the Facebook group as well.
Is this homeschool group affiliated with any particular religious group?
No. Brave Schoolers is a non-sectarian group, we do not promote one specific view- all world views, belief systems, and religious perspectives are welcome and respected.
